Screen Recorder

LET’S GET YOU RECORDING

A little help.
A better take.

Setup instructions, answers to common questions, and ways to support the project.

Make your first recording

  1. Install Screen Recorder from its Chrome Web Store listing, then pin it from Chrome’s Extensions menu.
  2. Click the extension icon. Choose shared audio, microphone, and video quality.
  3. Press Start recording, then choose your screen, window, or Chrome tab.
  4. Allow microphone access if you enabled it. Keep the recorder tab open while you switch to the content you want to capture.
  5. Return to pause, mute, or press Stop & save. Preview the recording and click Download.

Screen & audio

Why is there no browser sound?

Select a Chrome tab and enable Share tab audio in Chrome’s picker. The extension’s Shared audio setting requests sound, but Chrome must actually provide an audio track. Whole-screen and window sound availability depends on your operating system and Chrome version.

My microphone or screen permission was denied.

Try again after checking Chrome’s permissions. You can turn the Microphone option off to record without your voice. On macOS, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording or Screen & System Audio Recording, and Microphone. Enable Chrome and restart it if macOS asks.

I hear an echo in my recording.

Use headphones when recording shared sound and your microphone together. Otherwise the microphone may also pick up audio coming from your speakers.

Can I switch tabs during a recording?

Yes. The recorder continues in its own tab. What appears in the video depends on the source you selected: a chosen Chrome tab stays that source even when you view another tab. Keep the recorder tab open throughout.

Does Chrome’s Stop sharing button save my recording?

Yes. Ending screen sharing triggers the recorder to finish and save the available video. Return to the recorder tab to preview and download it.

Files & storage

Where are my recordings?

They are stored locally in the Chrome profile where you installed the extension. Open the extension to see your recording history. Click Download to save a separate WebM file on your device.

Can I download an MP4?

This version exports WebM. Chrome and VLC can play WebM files. If your workflow requires MP4, use a video conversion tool; built-in MP4 export is not included.

What happens if I close the recorder tab?

A recording interrupted by tab or browser closure may be incomplete. The extension saves chunks for best-effort recovery, but recovered files may not play correctly and may miss the final seconds. Always use Stop & save and download important recordings.

Can I record for several hours?

This version is designed for short-to-medium recordings. Longer sessions consume more memory and disk space. Test your intended duration on your computer and download the video after stopping.

How do I delete my recordings?

Click Delete beside a recording in the extension. This removes the browser-stored copy. Downloaded files remain on your device until you delete them separately. Uninstalling the extension or clearing its data can also remove local history.
